A profusion of planting

How many plants, shrubs, bulbs and trees do you think have been planted in Arlington Square over the last two years? A few hundred? A few thousand?

While at times we are a little hazy on exactly where our volunteers have buried everything, especially bulbs, we have kept a meticulous count of how many items have been planted. And by the end of our last Gardening Saturday on 10 November, the total had reached an amazing 20,000!

That is an astonishing amount of fund-raising, buying, digging, planting and long hot baths recuperating. It’s no wonder the Square now attracts admiring and appreciative visitors – and is subject to far less anti-social behaviour. Our volunteer gardeners can take some deserved rest over the winter but will be back in earnest in early March to prepare for the next steps in the beautification of this well-loved garden square.

If you’d like to help garden in 2013, just turn up any time on one of our Saturday morning gardening days. You don’t need to be an experienced gardener. Beginners and children are very welcome. We’ll supply the tools, the know-how, drinks and biscuits. Fresh air, gossip and free healthy exercise guaranteed.
