A mystery (partly) eggsplained

In the last Arlingtonian, we wondered who or what had been burying eggs in our gardens and plant pots. Several readers have contacted us to point out that foxes are fond of eggs, and are dexterous enough to steal them, carry them, bury them and dig them up later, all without breaking them.

So now we know who’s to blame. But we still can’t be sure where the eggs came from. The ones we saw had no markings on them, so they were not shop-bought. And as far as we know, nobody in Arlingtonia keeps chickens or ducks. The most likely explanation is that foxes had been raiding birds’ nests on the canal – probably mallards’ – and relieving them of some of their eggs.
