Arlington Square Summer Fete - 3 September

3 September 2016

The Arlington Square Summer Fete takes place this year on Saturday 3 September

Preparations are in full swing for what is our biggest event and major fundraiser of the year.

The plan is to fill the square with all your favourite fun activities. Expect a welcome return of Splat the Rat and The Human Fruit Machine, tombola and remarkable raffle, our calorific and gorgeous cake stall, tasty hog roast, children’s games, coconut shy and stalls for bric-a-brac, books, homemade preserves, plants and children’s toys.

The Dan Spanner Big Band will, by popular demand, entertain us again– dancing strictly encouraged.

This year the Fancy Dress theme and competition celebrates 45 years of Mr Men and Little Miss books. With 90 different characters to choose from we think your biggest headache will be choosing which one to come as. Time to get out the body paints all you Little Miss Giggles and Mr Tickles. Adults very welcome to dress up too!

Every penny of the profits from the Fete goes towards deserving local charities and our work beautifying Arlingtonia and our lovely square. The nominated charities this year are Pack-Up the free Monday lunch venue in St James’ church hall staffed by volunteers and wheelchair users from Richard Cloudesley School, St Joseph’s Hospice in Hackney and the community-based Laburnum Boat Club which is run by volunteers and aims to be a positive force for changing lives in a safe and supportive environment

Elspeth Thompson Bursary Plaque Unveiling

Elspeth Thompson

10 May 2014

To celebrate the completion of the Arlington Square Community Hub we will be unveiling a commemoration plaque on Saturday 10 May at 12.30pm. This project was funded by the National Gardens Scheme 2013 Elspeth Thompson Bursary. Elspeth Thompson who died in 2010 was an enthusiastic supporter of the National Gardens Scheme and wrote a much loved ‘Urban Gardener’ column in the Sunday Telegraph. The bursary, administered by the Royal Horticultural Society supports horticultural based projects that benefit the community and develop and share a love of gardening.

Over the last 12 months Arlington Association volunteers have transformed this space in the middle of Arlington Square Gardens. What was once trampled compacted earth are now beautiful beds with palm trees, cordylines, roses, alliums and nepeta.

The plaque will be unveiled by Penny Snell – Chair of the National Gardens Scheme

Our own experience in Arlington Square very much shows that this is true.
